What causes prolapse in laying hens?

Prolapse is common in overweight hens and small, early-laying pullets (young hens). The oviduct may be slow to retract when a hen is too fat. Prolapse can also be caused by injury to the vagina, which can occur when a large egg is laid.

What causes prolapse in birds?

The main cause of cloacal prolapse in birds is when there is a long-term strain put on the cloaca or vent. Behavioral and physical aspects can contribute to your bird straining their cloaca. Delayed weaning of hand raised and hand fed birds do have a higher tendency of cloacal prolapse.

What is a vent prolapse?

How do you fix a prolapsed chicken?

Wash the protruding mass with warm water and a gentle antiseptic. Lubricate it with medicated Vaseline or mastitis ointment. Then push the prolapsed mass very gently back into the vent. Isolate the recovering hen from the rest of the flock (which might be tempted toward cannibalism).

Can a chicken survive a prolapse?

How do you prevent a prolapse when laying birds?

Look into reducing the light intensity by covering windows, or replacing bulbs with lower watt bulbs. If the flock is laying a lot (more than 4%) double-yolked eggs, gently restrict feed intake. Birds should be watched to observe vent-pecking behaviour and isolate such from the flock.

Can a prolapse correct itself?

Prolapsed organs cannot heal themselves, and most worsen over time. Several treatments are available to correct a prolapsed bladder.

Can you push a prolapse back into place?

If you have a rectal prolapse, you may be able to push the prolapse back into place as soon as it occurs. Your doctor will let you know if this is okay to do. Put on disposable gloves, and put lubricating jelly on your finger. Gently push back any tissue that has come out of the anus.

How do you stop egg binding?

To keep your hen from becoming egg-bound, it is important to provide an appropriate diet so that she is healthy and has adequate calcium stores. Providing supplemental sources of calcium (such as a cuttlebone) during egg-laying season will help prevent deficiencies in calcium.
